New method for dengue control: fight fire with fire

Mosquito control is key to dengue prevention. There is a new method to control dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases by releasing good mosquitoes. Is it safe? How does this method work? Let Dr Phoutmany explain this new method for dengue control that is happening right now in Vientiane.
Rickettsia: the food thief

Rickettsia are a type of bacteria that need host cells to grow. This makes it very difficult to detect with standard tests and to grow them in the laboratory. Find out more about this group of bacteria which can cause diseases such as murine typhus.

Adequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions are fundamental for human health. Water borne diseases can be reduced due to WASH. Vilaysone will describe what WASH practices are being used in Laos and how this is related to the spread of infectious diseases in the country.

The mysterious saola: ecology and conservation of the Lao unicorn

The saola is one of the most endangered animals in the world and has only been seen in the Annamites on the border of Laos and Vietnam. Hear how the Saola Foundation are using new tools to detect the saola in the wild in the hopes to protect them.

Seeds: the genetic exchanges enabling Lao agriculture

Agriculture in Lao PDR is changing quickly. The big new export crops supporting the Lao economy depend on genetic resources that often come from distant or unexpected places. In this talk we will look at the origins of important crops in Lao agriculture, and how accessing seed pulls Lao farmers into regional and global exchange networks and debates.
